Golf Club Iron Sets Checklist
Golf club iron sets rules of thumb and other information. Distances of short, long and mid irons, fitting checklist.
Rules Of Thumb For Golf Club Iron Sets
Most women's iron sets commonly contain a 3-iron, 4-iron, 5-iron, 6-iron, 7-iron, 8-iron, 9-iron, a Pitching Wedge - PW - and a Sand Wedge - SW. All clubs have their own balance. A club with a heavy head and a short shaft has its own balance, just like a lady golf club iron with a long shaft and a lightweight head. You can discover that by your own without effort. I've choosen for lady golf club irons that are light, for more control. For information of all sorts of wedges I refer you to my special page about wedges on this site.
Short Lady Golf Club Iron Sets
The 8-iron, 9-iron, 10-iron, the Pitching Wedge and the Sand Wedge are short irons. These irons have high loft - the club face is somewhat more open - therefore you can make higher and shorter approach shots to the green.
The average distances for women golfers with short irons, approximately:
|
Distance Golf Club Iron Sets |
| 8-iron |
110 - 120 yards (100-110 meters)
|
| 9-iron |
100 - 110 yards (90-100 meters) |
| Pitching Wedge |
90 - 100 yards (85-90 meters) |
| Sand Wedge |
40 - 70 yards (35-65 meters) |
Prevent hooks and slices. You can prevent hooks and slices with a short golf club iron. How?
- Pay attention to your grip technique
- Take a square stand to address the ball - in other wordsparallel to the direction of your goal
- Put another club parallel to your toes
- The grooves of the club face has to be square to the ball
- You'd better place the ball in the middle of your stand, but I note that right handed beginners, high and mid handicappers best place the ball a little bit to the right, left handed lady golfers vice versa
- Try to hit the underside of the ball
- Shift your weight a little bit to the left - lefties to the right! - when you hit the ball
- And, don't look up to early! Say one when you make your back swing; two when you hit the ball, and look up only after you say tee - or three :-)
Long And Mid Lady Golf Club Iron Sets
The 2-iron, 3-iron, 4-iron and 5-iron are called Long irons. The loft of these clubs is low. Although the 5-iron also is called a Mid iron. The other Mid irons are the 6-iron and the 7-iron, with a slightly higher loft. Long irons have a longer shaft, and less loft, but commonly they are somewhat lighter than short irons. Many of us think long irons are hard to get under control, and therefore they don't use long and mid iron golf clubs. Here are a few tips:
- If your ball lies on top of some grass, then keep the ball a little bit on the left of the middle of your stand - left hand lady golfers: right. Try to glide through the grass during your down swing
- If the ball lies on a flat surface, then keep the ball a little bit to the right of the middle of your stand - left hand lady golfers: left. Try to hit the ball low, without touching the grass! That's what many of us do wrong
Other solutions in those situations: Choose a 7-wood instead of a 3-iron. That wood has a wider sole, so it's easier to glide through grass and light rough. Or think about Hybrids instead of the regular lady golf club iron sets.
The average distances for women golfers with long and mid irons, approximately:

| 3-iron |
160 - 175 yards (145-160 meters) |

Fitting Checklist For Lady Golf Club Iron Sets

|
Favourite lady golf club - Remember the lenght and the lie of your favourite iron in case you want to purchase another lady club number. The lie may vary for each golf brand and all sorts of lady golf club iron sets. The smaller you are: take women's irons with a lower lie. You can increase your distance with a good lie. Most golf club iron sets have a good lie to ensure that the part with which you can hit the ball well - the sweetspot - is as large as possible, as a result of which you will have less mishits.
|

|
Player profile - Create some kind of player profile, because: know what you need. And talk about it with your golf pro and golfing-friends about possible lady golf club iron sets.
|

|
Loft - Is the loft of the irons all right for you?
|

|
Shaft - Do the shafts of all lady golf clubs in the iron set set have the right length for you? Does the shaft have the right flexibility for you? Lady golfers have to focus on this point. You can choose for golf club iron sets with graphite or steel shafts. But often you'd best choose for lady golf club iron sets with - light weighted - graphite shafts.
|

|
Grip - What's the grip size? Do not take grips that are too thick if you have slender hands. And ask yourself what kind of material the grips in the golf club iron sets of your choice are made of.
