Golf Club Shafts Checklist
Golf club shafts lenght, proper fitting, and flexibility faqs. Checklist for graphite shafts and a checklist for steel shafts.
What Lenght Of Shafts Do I Need?
Look for standard length unless you are smaller than 5’ 2" or taller than 5' 8". To make it a bit complicated: a short woman with short arms could need a longer lady golf club. But tall ladies with average arm lenghts may be need a standard golf club shaft length.
Proper Fitting
Do take a proper fitting for determining the length of your lady golf club shafts. You can figure it out by yourself by measuring the distance between your wrist and the ground. Wear your golf shoes!
Average height players - wil note between about 31 and 34 inches: standard lady golf shafts.
Shorter players - 30 and lower inches. Choose somewhat shorter shafts then standards. May be you should take a look at my lady golf club petite page to find out what you options are.
Long players - 35 inches and higher. Use longer shafts. If you hesitate about the proper lenght of your golf club shafts, then may be you also could consider changing the lie of you clubs in stead of buying shorter or longer women's clubs.
What Golf Club Shaft Flex?
Women with a slow swingspeed should choose an Ladies flex - LL or L - shaft, which is most flexible and enables you to hit far.
Regular - R - is fine for mid handicappers with a slightly faster swingspeed up to 90 to 95 mph.
If you are a low handicap lady with a fast swingspeed up to 110 mph who wants good control, then take a Stiff - S - or firmer shaft.
An Uniflex shaft is actually fine for any golfer.
Graphite Shafts
Women often are advised to buy clubs with graphite shafts. And no irons and woods of steel. The likes: Since graphite shafts are lighter, you swing 'feels' easier. Graphite golf clubs absorb vibrations during your swing. That's why you can use longer clubs - especially a lady golf driver and fairway woods - and reach more distance. A dislike: You pay for that luxury feeling. Golf clubs with graphite shafts normally are more expensive and less durable than steel.
Graphite is a synthetic material and varies in strenght, weight and flexibility:
- An Ultra light graphite shaft is about 50g.
- A Lower End graphite shaft weights about 75g.
- A High-Modulus graphite shaft is somewhat stiffer.
- Also there are Bi-Matrix club shafts, they are made of graphite and steel. Bi-Matrix woods have a graphite shaft with a steel tip. Bi-Matrix irons have a steel shaft and a graphite tip. Both versions are meant for some more control.
Note: Watch out for sets with very cheap graphite shafts for women. Sometimes you see ladies golf club sets with graphite lady golf clubs for less than 200 dollars. But those cheap shafts are made of so called graphite fiberglass. That's not 100% graphite. Fiberglass hasn't the valuable qualities of real graphite.
