Golf Wedge Set Checklist

Wedge types, what golf wedge set for women? General checklist for all golfers.

Wedge Types

A standard lady golf wedge set usally contains a Pitching Wedge and a Sand Wedge. But you can choose for one or more additional wedges - with much more loft and significant names: trouble wedges. Wedges actually are specialized irons with blade club head forms, and high loft for high ball flights but less distance. They are used for short shots, for instance to get out of the rough, and of course short shots to the green. Wedges mostly have a little bit shorter shafts than the regular irons.

Golf Wedge Description
Golf Pitching Wedge (PW) A loft of around 48 degrees
For shots out of the rough and uphill
For distances of 120 to 130 yards (110 - 120 meters) to the hole
Approach Wedge (AW) or Gap Wedge (GW) A loft of around 52 degrees
Meant for filling the gap between the PW and the SW
Golf Sand Wedge (SW) A loft of around 56 degrees
Generally for shots out of a bunker
Also used for shots out of high rough
Lob Wedge (LW) A loft of around 60 degrees
You can make a lob over various obstacles, for example water hazards, rough, ground under repair areas and bunkers, or uphill to the green
High Lob Wedge (HW) Wedge with a loft of around 64 degrees

Last Wedge (LW) Wedge with a very high loft of around 68 degrees
Can be helpful for very high shots out of the bunker or for shots uphill

What Golf Wedge Set For Women?

Which wedge do you use in which situation? And which ones do you need in your bag? Good questions, but it's hard to give answers that fit every lady golfer. Any way, let's try. Remember these rules of thumb: find out which distances you want to reach, and in which areas of the course. Consider the outcome as your starting point in picking out the right golf wedge set of the wide range of wedges.

A lot of women have two wedges in their golf set: a Pitching Wedge and a Sand Wedge. But a lot of lady golfers purchased one additional wedge.

General Checklist For All Lady Golfers

Choose for a Pitching Wedge, Sand Wedge, and may be a Golf Lob Wedge to complete your golf wedge set. Think about a Gap Wedge, if the gap between the wedges is more than 4 to 5 degrees.

Choose for a golf wedge set with steel shafts for a better control, even though you have irons 3 to 9 with graphite shafts.

Keep in mind that the harder the club head material, the more forgiveness you will get from the lady golf club. If you are a mid or low handicapper, then consider softer wedges for more control and more spin. Wedges made of softer head materials and smaller head sizes and forms allow you to hit the ball very accurate and precisely.

Think about the bounce of your golf wedge set. Bounce is the angle of the lowermost club's sole - on the back - in relation to the ground, measured in degrees. Rule of thumb: use a wedge with more bounce in a bunker, in high grass, in rough, or other soft grounded areas. For instance, a Sand Wedge has more bounce - you can get the ball jumped in the air, out of the bunker sand.

Note: Avert a set with wedges of the same bounce soles. You'd better choose for different lofts and different bounces in a golf wedge set.
